Please, accept my sincere greetings on the Day of Kyiv – the wonderful day of birth of our ancient yet ever young city.
The prophetic words of apostle Andrew of the First Call about the magnificent and glorious city on the Dnipro River Hills have come true. His words were corroborated by the age-long history of Kyiv which was destined to become the center of the powerful Kyiv Rus State as far back as the dawn of the Middle Ages, and now it is the capital city of independent Ukraine.

History

In 882 the first Kyiv Prince Oleg Ryurikovych united all Russ lands and began to reign in Kyiv with stating: “It will be the mother of Russ towns!” And since that time the power of Kyiv princes began to increase and with it the glory of the capital of Ancient Russ began to increase.

Contemporaneity

According to Article 133 of the Constitution of Ukraine, Kyiv has a special status. The city has the bodies of local self-government and the territorial organs of state executive power that function at the same level of management. The well-balanced system of power makes it possible for these bodies to function efficiently and in line with the Law of Ukraine “On the Capital City of Ukraine – the City-Hero Kyiv”.
